Coming Home from the War

As I’m walking to the bus stop to catch the bus to go shopping,

my prayer and my conscious intention is that my bus connections

always show up in divine right timing…

…providing maximum opportunity to smile upon and connect with a word of encouragement to whoever I encounter.

The other day I connected with a smile and encouraging banter with four bus drivers,

…and I gave encouragement and support to an innovative pioneering entrepreneur.

But the encounter that still dwells with me in my heart …drawing tears even now as I write this…

…was when I spent 20 minutes in conversation with a man just coming out of prison after having been incarcerated for a cannabis-related offense.

I didn’t know about any of that as we talked while sitting there together on the bus bench…

…and only realized later on after putting it all together from what he shared with me…

…just what our conversation must have meant to him.

He had voted for the legalization of cannabis…

but had somehow gotten caught up in the atrocities perpetrated by the criminal powers that be…

and he was presenting with all the signs of severe post traumatic stress,

trying to find his footing…

…dealing with the effects of all the unimaginable horrors of the life he had just left behind…

We shook hands …

…and revealed our palms to one another…

…exchanging energy as we shared a few moments of encouraging, mutually accepting conversation…

He was emotionally very fragile, easily startled, yet overly concerned that his large form and loud voice might be startling to me –  but he really, really wanted to connect.  It was apparent that this was his first encounter with any form of gentleness since coming out of his incarceration…

…and like a little abused puppy wanting to trust but afraid, he was quite unaccustomed to freely receiving gestures of kindness from a stranger.

Still, in those few moments of quiet conversation with an unexpected compatriot, he gratefully welcomed this stranger’s direction to where – after years of enduring all the mindless indignities from the sleeping minions of the powers that were – he would finally capture his hard-won reward for having served on the front lines as a light warrior in that unjust barbaric war.

I thank you for your service William Nelson.

You are quite honorably discharged from your duty –  and you are hereby granted an inexhaustible river of bliss…

and our community’s deepest, deepest gratitude.
